Mukdahan: The Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) is actively coordinating with insurance companies to expedite the payment of claims following a tragic accident in Mukdahan province, where a group of monks was struck by a pickup truck.
According to Thai News Agency, the accident occurred on July 2, 2026, at approximately 11:00 AM on Ban Na Si Nuan Road in Mueang Mukdahan District. The vehicle, registered as BT 1944 Mukdahan, collided with the monks who were returning from Wat Phum Manorom, heading towards Ubon Ratchathani Province. The incident resulted in the deaths of 10 monks, while 2 sustained serious injuries and 10 others suffered minor injuries. Authorities are currently verifying the identities of the victims and the extent of their injuries.
Mr. Chuchat Pramoonpol, Secretary-General of the OIC, stated that he has directed the OIC Mukdahan Provincial Office to assess the accident site and instructed the Consumer Protection Division to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure the victims and their heirs receive their insurance benefits. Preliminary investigations show that the involved vehicle was insured under the Compulsory Third-Party Liability Insurance Act with Theves Insurance Public Company Limited, valid from March 6, 2026, to March 6, 2027. The OIC is working with the insurer to verify benefits and facilitate claims processes for the victims and their families.
Under the Motor Vehicle Accident Victims Protection Act, victims are entitled to immediate compensation without the need to establish fault. Medical expenses are covered up to 30,000 baht per person for injuries, and up to 35,000 baht per person in cases of death or permanent disability. If liability is established, additional coverage is available, providing up to 80,000 baht for medical expenses and up to 500,000 baht for death or total permanent disability. Inpatient treatment also qualifies for a daily compensation of 200 baht for up to 20 days.
The OIC has expressed its condolences and is committed to supporting the injured and the families of the deceased. The commission is coordinating closely with insurance companies to ensure fair and just compensation for the victims and their heirs.
