Oil Spill Contained in Prachinburi Floodwaters

Prachinburi:The Department of Industrial Works has successfully contained an oil spill mixed with floodwater in the Sri Maha Pho district of Prachinburi province. The factory responsible for the spill has been ordered to halt operations temporarily to implement necessary improvements and develop a rehabilitation plan. Although initial water quality tests showed no heavy metals posing immediate hazards, the public is advised to avoid contact with the contaminated water for safety reasons.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pornyot Klanrong, Director-General of the Department of Industrial Works, stated that the Ministry of Industry is actively monitoring and addressing the issue of an oily sheen on contaminated water in the region. This situation emerged following floods in early October and is linked to industrial waste leachate from Green Environment Technology Co., Ltd. Authorities have used their powers under the Factory Act to mandate the closure of landfills and suspension of factory operations to prevent further contamination.

To mitigate the pollution, oil booms have been installed, proving effective in containing the oil slick. Extensive sampling and testing revealed that while oil and grease levels exceeded factory standards, most pollutants did not surpass legal limits, indicating no acute hazard. However, continuous monitoring is essential, as some pollutants, including hydrocarbons, were detected at higher levels, suggesting the use of lubricating oils or alternative fuels in the factory's processes.

The Department of Industrial Works continues to take measures to ensure environmental protection, requiring the factory to enhance its wastewater treatment facilities and secure waste storage to prevent further incidents.
