Mazar-e sharif: A powerful earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck northern Afghanistan near the city of Mazar-e Sharif, causing significant casualties and damage. The epicenter of the earthquake was located 28 kilometers deep, and it resulted in at least 10 confirmed deaths and approximately 260 injuries. According to Thai News Agency, the provinces of Balkh and Samangan have been the hardest hit, with seven fatalities and 150 injuries reported in these areas alone. Many of the injured have been transported to local health centers for treatment. Additionally, the Blue Mosque, a significant religious site, has sustained damage due to the earthquake.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has issued an orange alert, highlighting the potential for additional injuries as aftershocks and further seismic activity might occur. In response to the disaster, military rescue teams and emergency response units have been deployed to the affected areas. They have commenced rescue operations, working tirelessly to assist those trapped under the rubble.
A spokesman for Afghanistan’s Ministry of Health has confirmed the arrival of a medical team to the region, and nearby hospitals have been placed on high alert to accommodate the influx of patients. Emergency services remain vigilant as they continue to assess the situation and provide aid to those in need.
