Paramilitary Rangers Seize 240 kg of Crystal Meth in Clash with Drug Traffickers

Nakhon phanom: Paramilitary rangers clashed with an international drug trafficking gang, seizing over 240 kg of crystal methamphetamine.

According to Thai News Agency, the confrontation occurred when border patrol soldiers engaged with a transnational drug trafficking gang unloading sacks of drugs from a long-tail boat docked on the Mekong River's bank in Nakhon Phanom province. The seized drugs, weighing over 240 kg, have an estimated value of at least 10 million baht.

The clash involved a special task force from the 2101 Border Patrol Regiment and a group of approximately 4-5 drug traffickers. The traffickers were in the process of unloading the drug-filled sacks when confronted by the task force in the Na Khe Subdistrict, Ban Phaeng District. A black sedan was reportedly on standby to transport the drugs further into Thailand. The nighttime confrontation lasted nearly five minutes on April 5th before the traffickers fled, with some escaping back to Laos via the boat. Fortunately, no officers were harmed, and there were no injuries or fatalities reported.

After securing the area, law enforcement discovered eight sacks of narcotics along the escape route. Further inspection revealed methamphetamine packaged in green bags with Chinese characters, resembling Chinese tea bags. Each sack contained 30 packages, each weighing about 1 kilogram, totaling 240 kilograms. The street value is estimated at a minimum of 10 million baht.

Drug seizure statistics in the Nakhon Phanom border region over the past six months indicate more than 25 million methamphetamine pills and over 3 tons of crystal methamphetamine have been confiscated. Many of these are large-scale, high-value shipments, leading to armed escort teams prepared to engage in confrontations with authorities.

Security agencies continue to work with local authorities, community leaders, and residents to monitor and report any suspicious activities. Officials have strengthened border controls to thwart further drug smuggling into Thailand.
