Parit Calls for Scrutiny of Parliamentary Speaker’s Actions Over Loan Decree

Bangkok: Parit Wacharasindhu, a party-list MP from the People's Party, has called for the public to closely monitor the actions of the Speaker of the Parliament. Parit raised concerns over the possibility of the Speaker aiding the government in avoiding scrutiny on the emergency decree concerning a 400 billion baht borrowing.

According to Thai News Agency, Parit shared his concerns on Facebook, emphasizing the importance of today's parliamentary performance. He questioned whether the Speaker of the House would maintain impartiality or assist the government in evading scrutiny on the Cabinet-approved loan decree. The People's Party, alongside the opposition coalition, has submitted an urgent motion to establish a special committee for auditing and evaluating the expenditure under this decree, a standard procedure for past borrowing decrees.

The urgency of the motion's classification by the Speaker will determine its priority in parliamentary sessions. An urgent designation would prioritize the motion for next week's consideration, while a non-urgent classification would delay its discussion, potentially requiring government MPs' approval to proceed this session.

Parit highlighted the importance of the Speaker's decision, noting that a prior urgent ruling was made on the Land Bridge issue, which he agreed with. He argued that if the Land Bridge committee could be deemed urgent, the borrowing decree committee should be as well, given its approval by the Cabinet.

Failure to classify the motion as urgent could lead to suspicions of the Speaker aiding the government in bypassing scrutiny over the funds' use, potentially channeling public relief funds into a substantial energy project. Parit urged the public to monitor the parliamentary agenda and the Speaker's upcoming decision closely.
