Bangkok: Parit Wacharasindhu, a Member of Parliament and Deputy Leader of the People's Party, has expressed criticism of Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul's handling of a local government exam cheating scandal, describing the Prime Minister's attitude as contradictory.
According to Thai News Agency, Parit highlighted the Prime Minister's previous commitment to combating corruption and his embarrassment over Thailand's declining transparency scores. However, when confronted with an audio clip suggesting potential corruption, the Prime Minister dismissed it as nonsense. Parit pointed out the inconsistency, recalling past instances where evidence was initially belittled by the Prime Minister but later proven credible, such as during the oil crisis. He expressed surprise at the Prime Minister's quick dismissal of the video evidence and criticized the premature conclusion that no political figures were involved, noting that the clips mentioned political appointees. Parit emphasized the possibility of connections within the government, especially since the Prime Minister has overseen the Ministry of Interior since 2023.
Parit also addressed concerns about the investigation, assuring that the opposition would not allow the process to be incomplete. He stressed the importance of a comprehensive investigation, ensuring that all aspects of the case are thoroughly examined without selective vetting. Parit reiterated the opposition's commitment to a full investigation, ensuring that politicians do not escape accountability while civil servants bear the brunt.
In terms of additional evidence, Parit mentioned ongoing discussions with MPs responsible for the case and noted inconsistencies in previous investigations. He cited the swift transfer of civil servants in Phuket as an example of differing standards and contrasted it with the unresolved investigation into the Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration related to the "Help Namngern" chat message, which remains pending despite several weeks having passed.
