Bangkok: The parliament nearly descended into chaos when the opposition protested after the Speaker announced a change in the discussion time before the scheduled meeting began at 8:30 AM. They criticized this as potentially contradicting a consensus and not being a jointly agreed-upon schedule. Meanwhile, Koravee offered to mediate between the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) and the Kla Tham group to find a solution.
According to Thai News Agency, the House of Representatives meeting, chaired by Speaker Sophon Saram, began with members being allowed to discuss public grievances. Before proceeding to the agenda, Speaker Sophon reminded the assembly to adhere to the time limits for discussing public grievances, as some speakers had exceeded the two-minute time limit per person.
Then, Mr. Atthakorn Sirilatthayakon, MP for Chachoengsao from the Kla Tham Party, rose to clarify his letter of objection to the Speaker of the House's announcement of a change in the parliamentary session time from 9:00 AM to 8:30 AM. He explained that last week, members had agreed to hold parliamentary sessions every Wednesday and Thursday, starting at 9:00 AM. However, yesterday (April 1st), the Speaker announced the next meeting at 8:30 AM. Therefore, he requested that the Speaker reconsider the new schedule.
Mr. Sophon clarified that during discussions with political party representatives, he proposed reducing the time allocated for discussing public grievances before the agenda items by one hour, by opening channels for written discussions. Regarding the suggestion to end the meeting late, he cited the precedent that civil servants start work at 8:30 AM. If MPs were to sacrifice by starting the meeting at 8:30 AM, there would still be time for the chairman to provide written explanations to approximately 40 people per day. Since no one objected to this in the meeting, it was assumed that they agreed.
Subsequently, opposition MPs attempted to protest, including Mr. Parit Wacharasindhu, a list MP from the People's Party, who, as a representative attending the meeting of political party representatives, insisted that there was no set time for the start of the discussion. However, Mr. Sophon cut him off, leading to Mr. Pakornwut Udompipatkul, also a list MP from the People's Party, rising to protest the Speaker's conduct for not allowing the member to finish speaking but instead turning off the microphone. Mr. Sophon clarified that he did not turn it off, but that Mr. Parit had already sat down to listen to the explanation.
However, in the end, Mr. Koravee Prisnanantakul, MP for Ang Thong from the Bhumjaithai Party, agreed to coordinate with the Kla Tham Party and the Prachachon Party to discuss and reach a resolution before informing the Speaker of the House again.
The parliamentary session then proceeded to consider the reports of the agencies on the agenda.
