Pattaya Motorcycle Taxi Drivers Return Blue Vests Amid Controversy

Pattaya:The issue surrounding the blue motorcycle taxi vests in Pattaya came to a head as drivers returned their vests to the Bang Lamung district office today. The drivers were compensated 550 baht per vest, marking the end of a controversial measure that had replaced the familiar orange vests.

According to Thai News Agency, since early morning, the Bang Lamung District Office in Chonburi Province was bustling with motorcycle taxi drivers eager to return their blue vests. Officials facilitated the process by setting up a designated return point, verifying necessary documents, and aiding those who had misplaced their documents.

The blue vests were initially introduced as part of a regulatory measure for motorcycle taxis in Pattaya and Bang Lamung district. However, the switch from orange to dark blue vests was met with widespread criticism, primarily due to safety concerns at night, confusion among tourists, and the financial burden on drivers who had to purchase the new vests at 550 baht each. These issues prompted a review, and after just seven days, the governor rescinded the requirement, citing unnecessary expenses and safety concerns.

Following the refund process, drivers conveyed their appreciation to all involved parties for addressing the issue and alleviating the financial burden imposed by the vest change.
