Pavin Urges Investigation into People’s Party’s Foreign Affairs Candidate

Bangkok: "Pavin Chachavalpongpun, a professor at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University, has publicly questioned the ethics of the People's Party's candidate for Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Pisan Manawapat. This comes after the People's Party announced Mr. Pisan, a former senator and former Thai ambassador, as their candidate for the position.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pavin took to his Facebook page to post an open letter addressed to both the People's Party and media outlets. In his letter, he urged a thorough investigation into the qualifications and past actions of Mr. Pisan. He highlighted a specific incident during Mr. Pisan's tenure as Thai Ambassador to the United States, where he defended General Prayut Chan-o-cha's coup in a letter to The Washington Post. Mr. Pavin claimed that the letter contained false information, including assertions that there were no political prisoners at the time and that the Thai monarchy strictly adhered to the constitution.

Furthermore, Mr. Pavin raised concerns about an ethical breach involving Mr. Pisan, citing an extramarital affair during his service at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This alleged incident resulted in a significant complaint filed at the Ministry by the woman involved. Mr. Pavin's letter calls on the People's Party to verify whether they have scrutinized the ethics of their candidate to the same extent they have critiqued other parties.

The open letter ends with an appeal to social media users and the media to keep a close watch on the unfolding situation.
