People’s Party Calls for Cabinet Review of Flood Relief Measures

Bangkok: The People’s Party is urging the Cabinet to reassess the current flood relief measures to ensure greater equality among affected residents. The party is advocating for an adjustment in the compensation plan, proposing a monthly payment of 9,000 baht for the duration of the flood impact.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Panusaya Wacharasindhu, a party-list MP and spokesman for the Prachachon Party, highlighted the need for a review of the government’s flood relief efforts. He expressed expectations that the Cabinet meeting scheduled for tomorrow will address the compensation payment plan for those impacted by the recent floods. The existing Cabinet resolution, passed last October, offers a one-time compensation of 9,000 baht per household for residents affected by flooding lasting more than seven days.

Mr. Wacharasindhu pointed out two significant issues with the current plan. First, the compensation may not be distributed until after the floodwaters recede, despite the ongoing hardships faced by
residents who are unable to resume normal income-generating activities and are dealing with increased expenses. Second, the fixed lump sum is seen as unfair, as it provides the same amount to households experiencing short-term flooding as those enduring extended periods of inundation, resulting in prolonged disruption to their lives.

In light of these concerns, the People’s Party is requesting that the Cabinet revise the compensation strategy, changing the fixed rate to a monthly payment of 9,000 baht, reflecting the actual duration of the flooding’s impact on affected households.
