People’s Party Leader Urges Government Action on Clean Air Act During Songkran Festival

Chiang mai: The leader of the People's Party, Natthapong Ruangpanyawut, attended the Songkran festival in Chiang Mai and Lamphun, where he interacted with the public. He highlighted concerns about the severe impact of PM2.5 pollution on tourism. Natthapong called on the government to reconsider the Clean Air Act.

According to Thai News Agency, Natthapong, accompanied by Kittichai Techakulwanich, deputy leader, and Karunpol Thiansuwan, deputy spokesperson, participated in various Songkran festival activities in the Chiang Mai and Lamphun provinces. They began their day with the traditional bathing ceremony of Phra Setangkhomanee, the White Emerald Buddha, at Wang Chiang Man in Chiang Mai city. Later, they joined the traditional water pouring ceremony for elders at Wat Muang Kai, also in Chiang Mai city. The delegation then proceeded to Lamphun province to partake in the opening ceremony of the Buddha image bathing procession and other festival activities.

During the event, discussions with local residents in both areas focused on the challenges posed by wildfires and PM2.5 pollution in northern Thailand. Natthapong reported that public feedback indicated a significant drop in tourist bookings, as many travelers postponed their plans due to the pollution crisis and wildfires, affecting the local tourism industry.

The People's Party is actively advocating for the Clean Air Act as a solution to the region's environmental problems. The party has previously urged the government to fast-track the law's enactment. However, recent information suggests that the Cabinet may not advance the draft bill to Parliament.

Natthapong emphasized that if the Cabinet does not act, the People's Party is prepared to submit the draft for parliamentary consideration. The party aims to represent citizens' voices and extend wishes for hope, strength, and happiness to everyone during the Songkran festival.
