Bangkok: A Member of Parliament from the People's Party has advised Sophon, newly appointed as Speaker of the House, to study the information thoroughly and move forward with the process of nominating the Leader of the Opposition. People's Party MPs have emphasized that this procedure is not new and should follow established precedents.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Natcha Boonchaiinsawas, a list-based Member of Parliament from the People's Party, highlighted that House Speaker Sophon Saram mentioned the nomination delay was due to pending notification from the People's Party. Mr. Natcha stated that the process has clear precedents from past Speakers and should be expedited. He advised that any doubts should be addressed by studying information from previous officeholders. He further remarked that ongoing legal cases involving 44 MPs should not hinder the constitutional process. Mr. Natcha assured that the People's Party has a clear leader, Mr. Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, and no special steps are required from the party. He emphasized the importance of the Leader of the Opposition role as a key component of the democratic system, necessary for balancing the executive branch. Delays in this process, he warned, could negatively impact public interest rather than serve any political faction.
Next week, 35 standing committees are scheduled for allocation, and the People's Party has asserted its readiness to undertake legislative and oversight responsibilities to address and resolve public issues effectively. Regarding the legal situation of the 44 MPs, the party maintains that no wrongdoing has been committed, and they will continue their duties unless instructed otherwise.
