Pheu Thai Party Advocates for New Constitution Drafting

Bangkok: "Jaturong" reiterates that Pheu Thai supports the drafting of a new constitution. Chaturon proposed six points to the Election Commission, urging more forums for clarification and exchange of views on the referendum vote. He expressed concern that Thai people might lose their rights and reiterated that Pheu Thai supports the drafting of a new constitution.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chaturon Chaisang, a Pheu Thai Party candidate on the party-list and chairman of the party's referendum campaign committee, along with the committee members, issued a statement outlining their demands to the Election Commission (EC) and outlining campaign activities. They stated that activities undertaken since the committee's formation include campaigning with the public, promoting absentee voting, and proposing that the EC provide a single line of polling stations along all routes. Currently, they have prepared a citizen's guide explaining the background of the constitution, why a new constitution is necessary, and why the Pheu Thai Party approves it. They have also prepared a guide for candidates on how to campaign. This citizen's guide will be disseminated online and sent to all candidates via online platforms, with further printed documents to be sent later for campaigning until election day.

Mr. Chaturon added that the next activities will include campaigning with candidates, civil society groups, and academic organizations in all regions, or possibly organizing football events, which may not be held under the party's name but may be discussed with interested organizations, as currently only running or walking events are being organized. They will also set up an online war room to train candidates on the referendum and send candidates to participate in forums with the Election Commission. A large-scale joint campaign with civil society will be held on February 4th. However, he thanked the Election Commission for clarifying that political parties and candidates can campaign freely for the referendum and are protected by law.

Mr. Chaturon continued by saying that his proposals to the Election Commission are: 1. He suggests that the Election Commission increase the number of forums for explaining the referendum and organize forums for exchanging opinions between those who support and oppose it. He also proposes cooperating with the media to organize forums for expressing opinions or broadcasting live in all provinces nationwide. 2. The new document, which amends the requirement to have an "X" mark, should be delivered to people's homes with clear notification of who it should be sent to. He argues that without clear public announcements, people might vote incorrectly, as initially there was no explanation of what mark was required, but later it was stated that an "X" mark was necessary, which could lead to problems and invalid ballots.

Mr. Chaturon also stated that: 3. The Election Commission should emphasize that the content and scope of drafting the new constitution are in a subsequent step after the referendum, not during this referendum. This is to avoid post-referendum questions about the consequences of the referendum. 4. He is concerned that many citizens may lose their rights by not voting in this referendum. This loss of rights is significant because it is similar to the loss of rights due to not voting in parliamentary elections. Therefore, he wants the Election Commission to publicize and clarify this matter more thoroughly. 5. He wants the Election Commission to instruct election committees at polling stations to prepare the registration area, ballot collection area, polling booths, and ballot boxes according to the layout previously provided by the Election Commission to prevent citizens from leaving before the polls are completed. 6. If the Election Commission intends to hold forums for expressing opinions, he wants the Commis sion to extend the registration period to clearly indicate whether or not they agree with the draft constitution.

'Finally, I reiterate that the Pheu Thai Party has a clear policy of supporting the drafting of a new constitution, and everything we have done, we did in the name of the Pheu Thai Party,' Mr. Chaturon said.
