Bangkok: Pheu Thai Party calls on Bhumjaithai and Pracharath Party to jointly submit a draft constitutional amendment. Ms. Khattiya Sawatdipol, a party-list MP and deputy spokesperson for the Pheu Thai Party, addressed Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s response to a policy statement to parliament, which included a reference to an agreement between the People’s Party and the Bhumjaithai Party regarding jointly pushing for constitutional amendments to pave the way for a new constitution. She stated that Mr. Anutin’s comments raised concerns because the MoA between the two parties mentioned three actors who would jointly push for the draft amendment: the Cabinet, the Bhumjaithai Party, and the People’s Party. However, the Prime Minister’s statement that day made no mention of the Cabinet’s preparations for the draft proposal. Furthermore, he left the door open for coalition parties to express differing opinions, including his inability to discuss with the Senate to secure their approval of the constitutional
amendment.
According to Thai News Agency, this is a matter of grave concern, as there is no guarantee that the draft constitutional amendment will result in a constituent assembly that is connected to the people, as proposed by the Pheu Thai Party and the Prachachon Party. Mr. Anutin’s remarks suggest that only one draft will be approved by Parliament, namely the Bhumjaithai Party’s draft. If all are approved, the Bhumjaithai Party’s draft may be used as the primary draft, a draft that does not include the people in the equation. There is currently no indication that the Cabinet will be presenting this draft.
Therefore, the Pheu Thai Party urges the Bhumjaithai Party and the Prachachon Party to withdraw their proposed amendments and urge them to discuss clearly how to establish the Constituent Assembly (CAA). The MOA stated that the CA would be formed through elections, but the Constitutional Court ruled that this was not possible. Both parties, in favor of the MOA, should jointly find a solution to ensure the CA is as relevant and relevant to the people as possible.
Ms. Khattiya also stated that this matter is crucial to the MOA. Don’t act like you’re going your separate ways, especially the People’s Party, which believes it has the power to negotiate a minority government. This negotiation should be made clear. Otherwise, you yourself will be accused of using the constitutional amendment as a campaign strategy. The Bhumjaithai Party should also show some respect to the government’s founders. Avoid doing anything that the people can see as a move towards a “sour curry constitution that deceives the people.” Whether or not this will be democratic will be a matter of debate.
