Philippine Congress Overwhelmingly Dismisses Impeachment Motion Against President Marcos

Manila: The Philippine Congress has dismissed the impeachment motion against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., following an overwhelming vote by a coalition in the House of Representatives. The decision came after the House Justice Committee had previously dismissed two impeachment motions against Marcos, citing insufficient evidence to proceed with the charges.

According to Thai News Agency, the impeachment charges against President Marcos included allegations of undermining public trust, corruption, and constitutional violations. House Deputy Speaker Janet Garin announced the dismissal of the motion, indicating strong support for President Marcos within the legislative body. The final vote saw 284 members voting against the impeachment, with only 8 in favor and 4 abstentions.

The impeachment process requires a one-third vote from the over 300 members of the House of Commons to proceed. With the motion dismissed, the Philippine Constitution prohibits filing another impeachment motion against President Marcos until the following year. The charges included his decision to allow the extradition of former President Rodrigo Duterte to The Hague for trial related to his "war on drugs" policy, as well as allegations of abuse of power and corruption in a flood control project.

Efforts to impeach have now shifted focus to Vice President Sara Duterte, who is facing a renewed round of impeachment proceedings after surviving a similar attempt last year. Meanwhile, President Marcos has consistently denied the allegations against him, including accusations of drug use, which one petition claims disqualifies him from governing the country.
