Phuket: Deputy Interior Minister Phonphir Suwannachavi has announced that the Jewish New Year celebration in Phuket will see a significant reduction in attendees, limited to fewer than 700 people, due to concerns expressed by local Thai citizens.
According to Thai News Agency, Phonphir Suwannachavi revealed that the event, initially projected to attract 2,000 attendees, has been scaled down following consultations with the Phuket Provincial Administration. The initial plan included 1,000 Israelis residing in Phuket and another 1,000 flying in from Israel. However, due to concerns from local residents, the organizers have decided to downsize the celebration, limiting it to the Chabad venue from afternoon to night, with a cap on attendees. Police presence has been requested to ensure order, though the final decision rests with local authorities.
The Ministry of Interior has directed local officials to monitor the event closely, ensuring it does not disrupt Thai culture or exceed permitted times. While the event is on private property, which limits government interference, any violations could prompt further discussions or actions. The Deputy Minister emphasized that the celebration should respect local traditions, drawing parallels with Thai customs like ordination ceremonies.
In a separate issue, Phonphir Suwannachavi has ordered the Chachoengsao governor to investigate a case involving four bodies found in a local cemetery. The investigation will focus on how the bodies entered and exited Thailand and the circumstances surrounding their deaths. The investigation also involves comparing cemetery conditions from 2021 to 2024 to determine any violations that led to the denial of a license renewal.
The province has been tasked with ensuring the removal of the bodies within seven days if not done by the relatives, with legal actions and fines considered for non-compliance. The Deputy Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration is reviewing the legal framework, with a final decision on penalties expected shortly.
