Phuket: Phuket media outlets have taken a stand against legal actions they describe as SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) lawsuits, following their reports on issues at Bang Tao Beach and Freedom Beach.
According to Thai News Agency, the Chairman of the Committee on Political Development, Ms. Pakamon Nunanan, received a formal complaint from Mr. Worapong Yurahman on behalf of the news pages (Brutal Phuket) and (Phuket Information Center). The complaint was facilitated by Mr. Chalermpong Saengdee, Member of Parliament for Phuket Province, People's Party. The complaint signifies a call for justice regarding the lawsuits filed against local media outlets, which are perceived as attempts to hinder the dissemination of factual reports on social issues.
The complaint highlights that the respondent in these lawsuits has an ongoing legal battle, including a case of trespassing on public land. Previously, the respondent had initiated lawsuits against media outlets at the Ratchada Criminal Court in Bangkok. The complainants argue that these legal actions serve as a tool to pressure or intimidate the media. They have appealed to the Committee on Political Development to investigate these SLAPP lawsuits, aiming to protect media freedom and ensure public access to information.
Ms. Pakamon Nunanan commented on the transfer of the Deputy Governor of Phuket, known as the "Seafood Deputy Governor," suggesting that it might be the start of a restructuring of power rather than a resolution to the allegations. Questions have been raised about the involvement of individuals close to the Deputy Governor in bribery and land encroachment. There is concern over whether these conflicts of interest and power networks remain intact after the Deputy Governor's transfer, and whether all implicated parties will undergo investigation. The lack of clarity on disciplinary or criminal action adds to the skepticism.
The transfer of the Deputy Governor from Phuket to his hometown, Nakhon Si Thammarat, has sparked debate over whether it is a genuine punitive measure or a political maneuver. The shift in provincial leadership is viewed as part of a broader strategy affecting the political landscape in the Andaman coastal region of southern Thailand, especially Phuket, which holds strategic importance for future political competition.
There are widespread calls for a transparent and thorough investigation by the government and the Ministry of Interior to restore public trust. The effectiveness of setting up an investigative committee without delivering clear results remains in question. Society is keenly observing whether the transfer will address the deep-rooted structural problems in Phuket or merely result in personnel changes while the existing power network persists.
