Phuket:Phuket is set to host the grand "Vegetarian Festival 2026" from October 9-18, with expectations to generate over 1.4 billion baht in revenue.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ploytalay Laksmisangchan, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, confirmed Phuket Province's readiness to host the Phuket Vegetarian Festival (Jie Chai) in 2026. This significant cultural event, deeply rooted in the faith of Thai people of Chinese descent and people of all religions in Phuket, highlights the area's cultural heritage.
A central feature of the festival is the raising of the Koteeng pole, symbolizing the official start of the festivities, scheduled for October 9, 2026, at 5:09 PM. The festival itself is slated to run from October 10-18, 2026, with ceremonies at various shrines and temples throughout the province.
A notable event during the festival is the procession of deities around the city, which will begin on October 11, 2026. This year, the procession will be held at night, adding a special touch to the event. The deities' processions will continue until October 18, 2026, carried out by various shrines in Phuket.
Ms. Ploytalay stated that the festival, from the Koteeng pole ceremony to the Buddha image procession, will envelop the city in a powerful atmosphere of faith, with over 40 shrines and temples participating. An estimated 140,000 tourists, including many from China, Singapore, and Malaysia, are expected to visit Phuket during the festival. Hotel bookings in Phuket City have increased by about 10% compared to the previous year, with an average occupancy rate projected at 80%. While bookings in nearby districts like Kathu and Thalang remain steady, the festival is anticipated to drive significant revenue and economic activity in the province.
