Phumtham Addresses Cabinet Reshuffle Speculations, Emphasizes Prime Minister’s Role

Bangkok: “Phumtham” insists that cabinet reshuffle must listen to the Prime Minister, counters news of returning to control “Phra Nakhon”. Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, addressed rumors regarding a potential cabinet reshuffle that might see him reassume control of the Ministry of Commerce. He clarified that there is no current indication of such changes, underscoring the importance of adhering to the Prime Minister’s decisions.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham stated that the decision ultimately lies with the Prime Minister, and there have been no discussions or complaints from the Prime Minister suggesting a reshuffle. He emphasized the Prime Minister’s preference for straightforwardness and collaboration, highlighting the absence of conflicting agendas. Mr. Phumtham reiterated that the Prime Minister has not considered a reshuffle, as evidenced by a cabinet meeting on April 22, where it was made clear that no such plans were in place.

When questioned about concerns from Pheu Thai MPs regarding agricultural product prices potentially affecting the Commerce Minister’s position, Mr. Phumtham explained that these issues are part of political challenges. He noted that in politics, the focus should be on managing dissatisfaction to the minimum, as complete satisfaction is unattainable.

Regarding speculation on a cabinet reshuffle following the 2026 budget bill, Mr. Phumtham dismissed it as an outdated notion, stating that the government currently holds sufficient votes. He suggested that any decision would depend on the leadership’s perspective on achieving governmental goals and whether adjustments are necessary to meet public expectations.
