Phumtham Orders Proactive Measures for Southern Border Stability

Bangkok: Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, has expressed concern over the ongoing unrest in Thailand’s southern border provinces and has instructed security agencies to adopt a proactive approach to ensure stability and build public confidence.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham highlighted the need for a shift from a reactive to a proactive security strategy following a series of daily incidents in the region. Over recent days, the area has witnessed multiple attacks, prompting the Deputy Prime Minister to confer with General Pana Klaewplodtook, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army, who is currently abroad, to discuss the implementation of new security measures aimed at restoring public trust.

Mr. Phumtham also engaged in discussions with Pol. Gen. Kittirat Panphet, the national police chief, emphasizing the necessity for coordination between the army and police forces. Further conversations with Lieutenant General Paisal Noosang, Commander of the 4th Army, and other key officials from the Ministry of Interior and the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPAC) focused on devising a strategic plan to address the ongoing security challenges.

When questioned about intelligence reports, Mr. Phumtham declined to comment, citing concerns about potential leaks to opposition parties. He stressed the importance of maintaining control over the situation and employing tactical measures to prevent further incidents, ensuring that any developments are promptly communicated to him.

Regarding his presence in the region, Mr. Phumtham expressed his desire to visit but noted that his presence might divert resources away from local security efforts. Nonetheless, he emphasized his commitment to resolving the situation and indicated plans to visit the area once stability is restored.
