Bangkok: Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, has called for an urgent meeting with key security officials to revise strategies for managing the southern region following the shooting death of a novice monk. The incident, which took place in Saba Yoi District, Songkhla Province, has raised concerns over targeted attacks on Buddhists in the area.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham has summoned the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, the Commander of the 4th Army Region, and the Commander of the 9th Provincial Police Region to discuss the situation and make necessary adjustments to current plans. The urgency of the meeting is underscored by recent incidents targeting the Buddhist community, which Mr. Phumtham described as abnormal and pressing.
Mr. Phumtham noted that, due to other commitments, he has postponed his planned visit to the three southern border provinces. The Prime Minister’s absence abroad has also contributed to the need for rescheduling. He emphasized the importance of addressing the security issues promptly, indicating that the advisory team from the National Security Council has already convened to prepare for the upcoming discussions.
The Deputy Prime Minister stated that the meeting will focus on assessing the situation and implementing revised strategies to ensure the safety and security of the region’s residents. The results of these discussions are anticipated to provide a clearer path forward in addressing the ongoing security challenges.
