The Prime Minister also clarified that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has not decided to leave the country for negotiations with Trump.
According to Thai News Agency, at 12:05 PM, Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister, explained that discussions with the United States highlighted significant points requiring reconsideration before proceeding to formal negotiations. She indicated that Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, would provide further details on the matter.
Regarding the opposition’s suggestion to revoke the 2016 budget bill and support a loan bill to address Trump’s tax measures, the Prime Minister expressed openness to considering all opinions. She emphasized the importance of assessing the long-term impact and potential benefits of any changes, while appreciating the opposition’s input.
When queried about the possibility of traveling to the United States for negotiations, the Prime Minister noted her readiness to engage personally if necessary, but preferred to assess the negotiation level first. She also addressed concerns about potential delays in negotiations compared to other countries, asserting that Thailand is not behind schedule and is working within a 90-day timeframe.
The Prime Minister acknowledged global economic challenges and assured that her team is actively managing the situation. She highlighted continuous consultations with experts and stakeholders to ensure the best possible outcomes under current circumstances.
Regarding the GDP forecast, the Prime Minister remained hopeful it would stay on target, leaving detailed explanations to Mr. Pichai. She also mentioned informal discussions with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on using the ASEAN framework in negotiations with the United States.
On government policy adjustments, particularly the 10,000 baht digital scheme, the Prime Minister stated that current policies remain unchanged, but improvements will be considered. She stressed the importance of supporting entrepreneurs and farmers by enhancing export opportunities and ensuring beneficial trade relations with the United States.
