PM Slams Opposition Over Allegations of Influence by Former Leader

Bangkok: The Prime Minister firmly addressed the opposition over allegations of being influenced by her father, highlighting the irony in accusations that the opposition leader himself might be under external influence. She criticized the opposition’s so-called “devil deal” while recalling her own history of alliances to form a government. Emphasizing her consistent support for the opposition’s prime ministerial candidates, she demanded clarity on future parliamentary alliances.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, the Prime Minister, expressed her views during the no-confidence motion meeting, revealing that she had never heard her name mentioned so frequently. Despite the political conflicts, she believed in the potential for collaboration and questioned the opposition leader’s repetitive emphasis on leadership and influence, suggesting it might reflect personal insecurities. She acknowledged the political fates that both she and the opposition leader faced, noting shared experiences in their political journeys.

The Prime Minister, being Thaksin’s daughter, noted the criticism she faced since her student days, asserting that listening to Thaksin’s advice could be beneficial for the country given his esteemed reputation. She questioned why Thaksin’s continued involvement in politics post-disqualification raised more issues than other disqualified politicians. She also addressed the sensitive issue of the Uighurs’ return to China, explaining Thailand’s adherence to human rights principles and commitment to ensuring their safety, despite international criticism.

Discussing constitutional amendments, the Prime Minister outlined Pheu Thai Party’s commitment to reform, while acknowledging the challenges posed by complex laws and differing opinions within the coalition. She reiterated her leadership’s patience and sincerity in navigating coalition politics and emphasized the government’s respect for freedom of expression and its historical struggles alongside the red-shirt movement.

On political negotiations, Ms. Paethongtarn explained that deals are a part of global political processes. She recounted past collaborations with the opposition party and expressed frustration over the lack of reciprocal support for her party’s candidates.
