Poland Hosts 2026 World Underwater Chess Championship

Tarnovo podkurne: Poland is hosting a "submarine chess" tournament, where chess players from around the world are competing in an unusual arena, playing underwater. The 2026 World Underwater Chess Championship is a unique event that combines chess with diving skills. Competitors play chess at the bottom of a swimming pool in Tarnovo Podkurne, holding their breath. The chessboard used is custom-made and weighted to stay submerged, and the pieces are magnetic, ensuring they remain in place during the games. Each player is allowed only one breath before each move and can surface to breathe after their move is complete.

According to Thai News Agency, Paulius Pultinevicius, a 24-year-old Lithuanian Grandmaster, emerged victorious in the first-ever World Underwater Chess Championship. Kamil Dzida, an International Master from Poland, secured the position of first runner-up, while Harshit Raja, an Indian Grandmaster, claimed second place.

This year's World Championship features 62 competitors from around the world, welcoming both professional and amateur chess players, as the sport continues to gain popularity.
