Police Investigate Assault at Traditional Thai Folk Music Event in Roi Et

Roi et: Investigators are being expedited to question witnesses in the case of a 5-on-1 assault in front of a traditional Thai folk music (Mor Lam) stage in Roi Et. Police are urgently investigating to find those responsible for a five-on-one assault in front of a traditional Thai folk music (Mor Lam) stage in Roi Et province.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident occurred at a free folk music concert celebrating the official appointment of the abbot of Wat Warikasemrat, Moo 6, Ban Don Kloi, Nong Hee Subdistrict, Nong Hee District, Roi Et Province. The altercation, which took place on May 9th at approximately 3:30 AM near the entrance of Don Kloi Witthaya School, was widely circulated on social media, drawing criticism for its excessive violence. The assault involved five perpetrators: four men and one woman, who have been identified and questioned by police. They have since returned to Pathum Thani Province, with further legal actions pending.

The news team visited the injured man's home following his discharge from Roi Et Hospital. He suffered a head wound, a cut above his eyebrow, a swollen face, and two broken lower front teeth. Identified as Mr. Rungsang, 44, a resident of Don Kloi village, he reported feeling dizzy and experiencing body aches.

Mr. Khamsi, 70, the father of Mr. Rungsang, suggested the incident arose from a misunderstanding during the Mor Lam performance. The altercation began when Mr. Tor, a local villager attending the event, engaged in a fight with the group of perpetrators, who were there for a religious ceremony and fundraising efforts. After police took Mr. Tor into custody, Mr. Rungsang went to check on him. The assailants, possibly confusing Mr. Rungsang and Mr. Tor as allies due to similar attire, followed and attacked Mr. Rungsang. Mr. Khamsi expressed his sorrow and commitment to seeking justice.

Investigators at Nong Hee Police Station have summoned the five suspects for questioning. They are awaiting the submission of a medical certificate from Mr. Rungsang before proceeding with formal charges.

Pol. Col. Natthachai Phutlah, Superintendent of Nong Hee Police Station, stated that the incident began with a brawl at the folk music stage and escalated to a physical altercation at the concert venue entrance. The suspects, part of a fundraising group for the performance, have come forward. As the injured parties have been discharged, the police and investigators intend to follow legal procedures to ensure fairness and will continue to gather information before taking further action.
