Bangkok: Police have raided the homes of two Department of Special Investigation (DSI) officers allegedly involved in a local government exam cheating scandal, which has seen them purchase a luxury house in Don Mueang valued at 20 million baht. The officers, who have been suspended from duty by the Ministry of Justice, were arrested in connection with the "Mayor Heng" case involving bribery for local government recruitment exams.
According to Thai News Agency, the Anti-Corruption Division of the Royal Thai Police has made progress in the investigation, apprehending Mr. Prawit, also known as "Mayor Heng," a former parliamentary candidate from the Pheu Thai Party. He is accused of accepting bribes by claiming he could assist individuals in passing local government exams. The Chairman of the House of Representatives' Committee on Prevention and Suppression of Corruption and Misconduct has previously indicated possible involvement of government officials in the case.
Police Major General Jaroonkiat Panakaew, Deputy Commander of the Central Investigation Bureau, and officers from the Anti-Corruption Division have arrested Mr. Itthipol, a Senior Special Case Officer, and Mr. Anurak, a Senior Special Investigator. Mr. Itthipol was detained in Chonburi Province and Mr. Anurak at his residence in Bangkok. Both are under interrogation with charges being prepared by the Anti-Corruption Division.
The investigation led officers to search Mr. Anurak's residence at Soi Therd Ratchan 27, uncovering documents revealing ownership of another house in Don Mueang. A subsequent search of the luxury property, which was recently purchased for 19-20 million baht and is under renovation, was conducted. However, media access to the site was restricted.
Police Major General Jaroonkiat later addressed the media at the Central Investigation Bureau headquarters, confirming evidence linking the case to Mr. Heng. When further details were requested, he indicated that more information would be available at a scheduled press conference.
Mr. Anurak, upon his arrival at the Central Investigation Bureau, attempted to avoid media questions regarding his arrest and involvement in the case. He covered his face with a cap and mask as he entered the building, declining to comment.
The Ministry of Justice has issued a statement affirming its commitment to a thorough investigation, with no protection or leniency afforded to those involved. The Director-General of the DSI has been instructed to proceed according to civil service regulations, including the potential suspension of the implicated officers. The Ministry emphasized adherence to the Civil Service Act and the Code of Ethics, ensuring transparency and accountability.
