Bangkok: A police officer in Yala was ambushed and shot while returning from fishing with his wife and child; one officer was injured.

According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Col. Sombat Soonhua, Superintendent of Thung Yang Daeng Police Station, Pattani Province, reported that an unknown number of assailants ambushed and shot Police Sergeant Major Chakraphong Losanta, a patrol officer from Kotabaru Police Station, Yala Province. The incident occurred in Moo 4, Nam Dam Subdistrict, Thung Yang Daeng District, Pattani Province. Sergeant Major Losanta sustained a gunshot wound to his left thigh and was urgently transported to Thung Yang Daeng Hospital.

The investigation revealed that Police Sergeant Jakrapong, along with his wife and child, had gone fishing before the incident. Upon returning to shore, as he went to collect equipment from the boat to load into the car, an assailant hiding in the forest fired one shot, hitting him in the left thigh and causing him to fall. His wife then rushed to get help and took him to the hospital.

Latest reports indicate that Police Sergeant Jakrapong has regained consciousness and is out of danger, but remains hospitalized and under close medical supervision. Following the incident, forensic officers inspected the scene to collect evidence and are urgently investigating to apprehend the perpetrators. Security forces believe the incident was an attempt to create unrest with the intention of harming a government official. Other possibilities have not been ruled out and are currently under detailed investigation.
