Prachinburi Residents Rally Against Eastern Economic Corridor Policy

Prachinburi: More than 300 residents from Prachinburi gathered in front of the Prachinburi Provincial Hall, voicing their opposition to the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) policy and demanding a response from the government. The protesters, prepared for a prolonged demonstration, set up tents to signify their readiness for an extended protest.

According to Thai News Agency, the rally commenced late this morning at 9:00 AM, with protest leaders Mr. Sumet and Mr. Sunthorn Khomkai addressing the crowd. They accused the government of prioritizing Chinese investments and factories over local welfare, highlighting concerns about potential adverse effects on residents due to industrial activities and waste.

During the protest, participants attempted to approach a side gate of the provincial hall but encountered locked and chained doors. Security personnel remained stationed inside the building to prevent any unauthorized entry by the protesters. The demonstrators continued their protest by delivering speeches and donning costumes that mocked the provincial governor, all under the watchful eyes of police officers monitoring the event.

Sumeth, one of the key figures leading the protest, stated that the objective was to secure a response from the Prime Minister via the provincial governor. He reiterated their opposition to the establishment of the EEC and emphasized the peaceful and unarmed nature of their protest. However, he warned that should their demands go unmet or if the governor fails to engage with them, they would consider escalating their actions. The presence of tents underscored the possibility of a prolonged sit-in protest if necessary.
