Prime Minister Announces One-Year Mourning Period for Civil Servants Over Queen Mother’s Passing

Bangkok: The Prime Minister has announced that all civil servants, state enterprise employees, and government officials will observe a one-year mourning period following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother. This announcement was made through a post on the Prime Minister’s personal Facebook page, accompanied by an official statement from the Office of the Prime Minister.

According to Thai News Agency, the announcement follows a statement from the Bureau of the Royal Household on October 24, 2025, acknowledging the Queen Mother’s passing. As part of the mourning procedures, all government offices, state enterprises, government agencies, and educational institutions are instructed to lower their flags to half-mast for 30 days starting from October 25, 2025. While the public is encouraged to consider appropriate actions, private companies are not mandated to organize mourning events, contrary to circulating rumors.

Ms. Traisulee Traisaranakul, Secretary-General to the Prime Minister, clarified that the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul, did not resolve to suspend entertainment activities in the private sector for 30 days. Instead, the Cabinet meeting was focused on acknowledging the official announcement regarding the Queen Mother’s passing and discussing mourning procedures for government entities.

The Prime Minister has urged both the public and private sectors to adjust planned activities to align with the somber atmosphere of mourning, without issuing specific orders to halt any events. Acknowledging the pre-existing plans of sectors like entertainment and tourism, the government requests discretion in modifying activities to honor the Queen Mother appropriately.

Ms. Traisulee emphasized the importance of expressing condolences with unity, love, and respect, and dispelled any misinformation regarding restrictions on economic or social activities. The government encourages all Thai citizens to participate in the mourning period and pay their respects to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother.
