Bangkok: Political scientists are commending Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul for his diplomatic efforts during discussions with the Chinese leader, resulting in a guarantee that Cambodian tanks will not be used against Thailand.
According to Thai News Agency, Associate Professor Dr. Chetha Sapyaen, a political scientist at Navamintrathirat Open University, highlighted the significance of Prime Minister Anutin's visit to the People's Republic of China. Beyond fostering cooperation in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, electric vehicles, and humanoid robots, Dr. Chetha emphasized the importance of discussions with President Xi Jinping addressing security concerns, particularly China's delivery of tanks to Cambodia.
Associate Professor Dr. Chetha pointed out that the Thai government adeptly used the economic and technological forum to address security issues, highlighting the interconnectedness of international negotiation agendas. This strategic diplomatic move is seen as essential in safeguarding Thailand's national interests amidst contemporary international politics, where economic and security issues are closely linked.
For several weeks, Thai society has been concerned about the delivery of Chinese tanks to Cambodia, raising questions about border security. The discussions with Chinese leaders clarified that the tank purchase was based on a pre-existing contract and that delivery delays were due to emerging tensions. China assured that the tanks would not be used against Thailand, underscoring the need to balance relations with both nations.
Dr. Chetha emphasized China's commitment to ensuring that Cambodia will not use the tanks against Thailand, noting Thailand's regional advantages in consumption and production capabilities. The political scientist also praised the leadership for addressing sensitive issues with major powers, highlighting that strong international relations involve candid discussions based on mutual respect and interest protection. Additionally, China expressed readiness to support easing tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, offering to host the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation meeting to foster dialogue.
