Prime Minister Awaits Study Results on MOU 43-44 Cancellation

Bangkok: The Prime Minister has requested patience for the results of a study on the plan to overturn MOU 43-44, emphasizing that he would not put Thailand at a disadvantage.

According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul discussed Deputy Prime Minister for Legal Affairs Bowornsak Uwanno’s preparations for a meeting to consider the referendum’s revocation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Thai and Cambodian governments. These MOUs cover boundary survey and demarcation (MOU 43) and areas with overlapping continental shelf claims (MOU 44). Anutin stated that guidance will be based on committee study results from both houses, which Bowornsak has compiled and summarized.

When asked about a solution to the issue amid public concern, the Prime Minister assured that a solution would be found. He stated that the Cabinet would decide on the cancellation based on comprehensive information once Bowornsak finalizes the results.

Regarding debates on unilateral revocation of the MOU, Anutin emphasized careful consideration of pros and cons. He reassured that the government would not disadvantage Thailand, highlighting ongoing work, negotiation, and study before making a decision.

On the study by the Special Committee on MOUs 43 and 44, led by Chaichanok Chidchob, the Prime Minister clarified that results would be submitted to the Cabinet. The Cabinet would designate someone, potentially the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Defense, or Interior, to summarize the findings.

When asked about urgency, Anutin indicated adherence to the process. He affirmed that the plan would follow parliamentary guidelines, including waiting for committee study results before proceeding with the referendum.
