Bangkok: The Prime Minister has directed the Cabinet to receive reports of public grievances directly from affected areas in an effort to prevent protesters from storming Government House. This initiative also involves assigning Pakorn to oversee the termination of the 44th Memorandum of Understanding.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek announced the results of the Cabinet meeting, where Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who also serves as the Minister of Interior, emphasized the importance of Cabinet members fulfilling their duties to care for the public. He urged ministers to reach out directly to the citizenry instead of requiring them to travel to Government House. After appointing political officials, he stressed the need for them to be assigned to oversee constituents in their respective areas. The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude to all sectors for the successful conduct of the Songkran festival, which garnered international acclaim, and noted the overall decrease in accidents during the celebrations.
The Prime Minister's visit to Chiang Mai province focused on addressing the PM2.5 dust problem, highlighting his concern for its impact on the public, economy, and tourism. He instructed relevant ministers to take decisive action, assuring them of the government's readiness to provide necessary resources to combat the wildfire and PM2.5 issues. He pointed out that 30-40% of the problem is due to transboundary dust and announced upcoming ASEAN mechanisms and measures by the Ministry of Commerce, which include prohibiting the import of agricultural products from neighboring countries that engage in burning. This policy, effective January 1st, has led to a 70% reduction in corn imports.
The government is also preparing for potential floods and droughts. In response to demands to revoke MOU 44, Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilapraphan has been tasked with overseeing the legal process for its swift revocation.
