Bangkok: The Prime Minister extended his gratitude to Parliament following the approval of an emergency decree permitting the government to borrow 400 billion baht. The Prime Minister conveyed his thanks to the government and reiterated his commitment to honesty, transparency, fairness, and verifiability, emphasizing the nation's benefit as the ultimate goal. He highlighted the necessity of the loan being repayable and assured that no favoritism would be shown. Additionally, he mandated strict oversight to prevent any budget leakage.
According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul expressed his appreciation in the House of Representatives for addressing the urgent matter of the Emergency Decree. This decree authorizes the Ministry of Finance to borrow 400 billion baht to mitigate the energy crisis and support the country's transition to sustainable energy by 2026.
The Prime Minister mentioned the extensive deliberations held throughout the day regarding the borrowing decree, presented by the government to Parliament. He acknowledged the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, who, as the Chairman of the Screening Committee, assured the public of the committee's commitment to honesty and transparency in handling projects related to the loan.
Expressing gratitude towards the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, the Prime Minister noted the demonstration of unity between policy and operational sectors. He emphasized his sincere intentions were solely aimed at benefiting the nation and its citizens, ensuring that the decree would not favor any individual.
The Prime Minister stated that he, along with Deputy Prime Minister Ekniti and all Cabinet members, would closely monitor budget expenditures to prevent any leakage. He thanked everyone involved for their contributions and insights during the decree's consideration.
Highlighting awareness of the financial implications, the Prime Minister acknowledged the loan as a significant responsibility rather than budget funds. He stressed that the cost of the loan is justified by the anticipated benefits of the projects under the Emergency Decree, noting the government's capacity to afford the loan at a favorable interest rate, previously mentioned as 1.2%. Continuous monitoring of the situation was assured.
The Prime Minister also committed to instructing government agencies to compile suggestions and recommendations discussed throughout the day to maximize the country's benefit during implementation.
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Prime Minister, emphasizing his dedication to serving the nation and its people.
At 8:25 PM, the Parliament voted in favor of the Emergency Decree, with 285 votes supporting the borrowing, 141 opposing, and 52 abstentions, out of a total of 478 votes cast.
