Prime Minister Launches “Solar for the People” Project to Promote Clean Energy and Economic Growth

Bangkok:The Prime Minister has launched the "Solar for the People" project, a significant initiative aimed at benefiting one million households by reducing electricity costs and enabling the sale of surplus electricity to generate income.

According to Thai News Agency, the project was inaugurated at the Santi Maitri Building of Government House, with Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul presiding over the ceremony. Several cabinet ministers and executives from relevant agencies were in attendance.

The initiative is part of the government's policy to promote clean and alternative energy, strengthening national energy security by transforming solar energy into opportunities for citizens. It involves installing solar panels on rooftops, which will help households save on electricity bills and participate in energy production. A subsidy of 50,000 baht per household will support the installation, fostering a sustainable clean energy society in Thailand.

In addition to reducing energy costs, the project aims to allow citizens to sell surplus electricity back into the national grid, generating additional income. This initiative is expected to reduce electricity costs by more than 24.5 billion baht annually, benefiting the grassroots economy and creating jobs and economic opportunities.

The project is a collaborative effort between the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, the Provincial Electricity Authority, and other government ministries, ensuring maximum public benefit. The Prime Minister emphasized prioritizing public needs, facilitating processes, and maintaining safety standards to maximize the project's advantages.

Furthermore, the project aligns with global trends in reducing carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy, potentially enhancing Thailand's trade opportunities and supporting its OECD membership application. The Prime Minister concluded by thanking all sectors for their cooperation and highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainable energy security for the nation.
