Prime Minister Launches “Solar for the People” Project to Transform Thai Households’ Energy Use

Bangkok:The Prime Minister of Thailand has launched the "Solar for the People" project, aimed at transforming electricity bills into family savings by encouraging the use of solar energy. This initiative is set to provide financial support of 50,000 baht per household, with the goal of reaching 1 million households to reduce electricity costs significantly by over 24.5 billion baht annually.

According to Thai News Agency, the project was inaugurated by Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul, who presided over the launch ceremony of the "People's Solar" project. This initiative not only focuses on installing solar panels on rooftops but also empowers energy users to contribute to the country's energy production, thereby converting electricity bills into savings for families.

The "Solar for the People" project is structured to aid 1 million households across the nation in becoming self-sufficient in electricity generation through solar energy. By providing a subsidy of 50,000 baht per household, the initiative is expected to drive Thailand towards a sustainable clean energy society. Households will also have the opportunity to sell excess electricity back to the national grid, generating additional income and fostering economic and social benefits.

Initial assessments suggest that the project could lower electricity expenses by more than 24.5 billion baht per year, with these savings reinvigorating the grassroots economy by stimulating employment and economic opportunities across communities nationwide.

The Prime Minister emphasized the potential of clean energy to enhance trade opportunities for Thailand. As global markets increasingly demand renewable energy in production processes, the project aligns with Thailand's aspirations to join the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), promising to unlock further economic, trade, and investment prospects.

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to all sectors for their support in advancing the project, highlighting the role of collaboration in ensuring that Thai citizens benefit from clean energy at fair prices, ultimately achieving sustainable energy security.
