Bangkok: The Prime Minister has mandated the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Commerce to take immediate steps to regulate fruit prices and explore new market opportunities both within Thailand and internationally. The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit the Eastern region this week to address the concerns of local farmers.
According to Thai News Agency, government spokesman Mr. Jirayu Huangtrakul disclosed that during a cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra emphasized the urgency of addressing the fruit production situation for the 2025 season. Reports from the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives indicate a projected increase in the production of fruits such as durian, mangosteen, mango, and longan by 10-30 percent, attributed to favorable weather and ample water supply. Consequently, the Prime Minister instructed the Ministry of Agriculture to expedite the distribution of produce to prevent oversupply, manage farmer groups for better control over production quality and quantity, and enhance market value through processing. Additionally, there is a directive to expand marketing channels, including e-commerce platforms.
The Ministry of Commerce has been tasked with market management to avoid product surpluses, maintain stable and fair prices, and collaborate with both public and private sectors, as well as international markets, to export fruits to countries with high demand. Ensuring that the quality of these exports meets international standards is also a priority. This week, the Prime Minister plans to tour the eastern provinces, which are key fruit production areas, to engage with farmers and devise practical solutions to their challenges.
In preparation for the annual Thai Ambassadors’ Meeting, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce will organize a joint meeting involving ambassadors from various countries, commercial and agricultural ambassadors, and BOI offices worldwide. This initiative aims to align Thailand’s foreign policy implementation, strengthen international relations, and foster cooperation across various sectors. The focus will be on enhancing investment, exports, and opening new markets for Thai products to maximize national benefits.
