Bangkok: The Prime Minister affirmed there will be no ceasefire this evening, as claimed by the US leader. The Prime Minister said he had already clarified the matter via Facebook, refuting US President Trump’s claim that Thai soldiers stepping on landmines was an accident. According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul addressed the issue of US President Donald Trump’s post on Truth Social following his phone call with the Thai and Cambodian prime ministers, in which he stated that the Thai soldiers’ stepping on a landmine was an accident. Prime Minister Anutin stated that he had already clarified the matter on Facebook this morning.
Regarding the discussions with the US President, were there any mention of a ceasefire or a return to the peace declaration? The Prime Minister confirmed that these were not discussed, emphasizing that nothing had been agreed upon. It was merely a discussion and a routine update on the situation. He reiterated that Thailand must fully protect its sovereignty and its people in the conflict between the two countries.
Regarding whether the US President understands that Thailand will not yet cease fire, Mr. Anutin said that Mr. Donald Trump did not say whether or not there should be a ceasefire.
When asked whether Thailand had told the United States that we would not cease fire, Mr. Anutin said, “No, we didn’t, but we are fulfilling our mission.”
When pressed further on whether this meant they didn’t need to listen to what the US president said, Mr. Anutin stated that they didn’t want to say anything like that because it would affect international relations. They must respect their friendly nations, and there’s no need to engage in further arguments. Therefore, they will continue to act in what they deem appropriate for the situation.
Regarding Donald Trump’s statement that Thailand and Cambodia would have a ceasefire this evening, and whether this was a forced decision, Mr. Anutin retorted by asking, “Has there been a ceasefire? Cambodia fired heavily this morning, into areas that are no longer military targets, because BM-21 rockets landed in populated areas, causing serious injuries.”
The Prime Minister further questioned, “Does Thailand need to listen to anyone today? If we keep listening to this person or that person, will we have time to protect our sovereignty and our people?”
Regarding the US President’s statement that stepping on a landmine was an accident, and whether this was due to prior discussions with the Cambodian side, Mr. Anutin said he did not know and suggested asking about the conversation Mr. Donald Trump had with him.
When asked how Thailand would respond to Donald Trump’s accusation that its retaliation against Cambodia was too harsh, Mr. Anutin said, “How many legs? How many corpses? You have to ask like a Thai person would ask, not like an outsider.”
