Bangkok: Prime Minister Sihasak Srimuang expressed concern over the case of a Chinese man found possessing weapons and explosives, emphasizing the need to carefully review immigration procedures. He also revealed plans to propose reducing the 60-day visa-free stay to 30 days.
According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangketkaew, commented on the arrest of a Chinese national by police in Na Chom Thian, Chonburi province, for possessing firearms, ammunition, explosives, and military equipment without a permit. He stated that the arrest was worrying but that he needed to review the investigation. He noted that the motive behind the possession of these items by a foreigner was unknown.
Sihasak emphasized the need to improve Thailand's immigration processes, noting that Thailand is an open society with tourists and business visitors, but cautioned against visa restrictions. He pointed out that some individuals enter under the 60-day visa-free entry policy, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its visa committee comprising various agencies, is considering reducing the visa-free period to 30 days. He stressed the importance of stricter visa requirements for each visa type and highlighted that Thailand offers many visa types, but those entering under such visas must meet the necessary qualifications.
When asked whether the perceived possibility of espionage was alarming, Mr. Sihasak stated that he would not comment at this time, but if it were true, it would be frightening, as the mere possession of those weapons is already terrifying. He added that further investigation would be necessary.
