Private Sector Representatives Address State Audit Office Building Collapse Before Senate Committee

Bangkok: Three private sector companies presented their explanations to the Senate Committee on Independent Organizations regarding the collapse of the State Audit Office building.

According to Thai News Agency, representatives from Meinhardt (Thailand), PKW Joint Venture, and Forum Architects attended the meeting chaired by Pol. Maj. Gen. Chatwarat Sangphet. The session was convened to investigate the circumstances leading to the building’s collapse during an earthquake on March 28.

During the committee meeting, representatives clarified their roles and responsibilities. Meinhardt’s representative, Mr. Thira Wattanasap, stated that their structural design was not to blame for the collapse. He emphasized that the design adhered to engineering principles and was verified to withstand earthquake vibrations. Pol. Lt. Col. Chatwarat, overseeing the investigation, noted that the committee is tasked with identifying defects and responsible parties, though questions about the building’s steel quality remain unanswered.

The Senate committee meeting involved closed-door discussions, excluding media presence, and focused on understanding the design, construction processes, contract management, and the impact of the earthquake. The committee’s goal is to compile a comprehensive report for the executive branch, addressing any inconsistencies with contractual obligations and construction standards.

Regarding the controversy surrounding design alterations, Pol. Lt. Col. Chatwarat explained that changes to the elevator shaft were minor and did not affect the building’s main structure. However, he stressed that no definitive conclusion about the collapse’s cause has been made, as further assessments involving additional agencies, including those related to earthquake studies, are necessary.

The committee continues to gather information, with plans to invite more agencies, including those involved in steel production and quality control, for further clarification. The investigation is ongoing, with the committee aiming to pinpoint any shortcomings and identify responsible entities. The police and other relevant agencies will continue their independent investigations into the incident.
