Probation Department Reports 276 Drunk Driving Cases on First Day of Songkran Campaign

Bangkok: Pol. Lt. Col. Suriya Singhakamol, Director-General of the Department of Probation, revealed statistics on cases where the court ordered probation on April 11, 2025, marking the first day of the campaign to prevent and reduce accidents during the Songkran Festival 2025. There were a total of 326 cases, with 9 cases involving electronic monitoring devices (EM devices).

According to Thai News Agency, 276 cases involved drunk driving, representing 84.66 percent of the total, with one case involving an EM device. Additionally, there were three cases of reckless driving, accounting for 0.92 percent, and 47 cases of drug driving, making up 14.42 percent, with eight cases involving EM devices. The Director-General expressed concern for those traveling during the festival and emphasized the Department’s operational plan comprising four key measures aimed at reducing road accidents. These measures include management strategies, reducing road and environmental risk factors, ensuring safe road usage, and providing assistance post-accidents.

Furthermore, probation offices across the nation have initiated activities to support officers in public service at 49 service points, checkpoints, and community checkpoints. In total, 1,077 probation volunteers, community justice networks, probationers, the public, and network partners participated in these activities. They also launched public relations campaigns involving 1,506 participants and provided social services, such as landscape improvements in high-risk areas, distributing helmets, promoting safe driving, and cleaning passenger transport stations to ensure safe travel during the Songkran festival.
