Proposal to Review Senior Citizens’ Driver’s Licenses Under Consideration

Bangkok:The concept of reviewing driver's licenses for senior citizens is currently being explored, According to Department of Land Transport. Despite discussions, there will be no immediate cancellation of lifetime driver's licenses.

According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Land Transport has confirmed that lifetime driver's licenses remain valid and are not being revoked. However, individuals aged 55 and above applying for new licenses are required to undergo a physical fitness test as per professional guidelines.

Mr. Sorapong Paitoonpong, Director-General of the Department of Land Transport, addressed misinformation circulating on social media regarding the potential cancellation of lifetime driver's licenses. He stated that this information is inaccurate and reassured that those with existing lifetime licenses will continue to retain their rights. The department emphasized that the regulations focus on new license applicants aged 55 and above, who must pass a physical fitness test based on academic guidelines for road safety.

Discussions led by Mr. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, Deputy Minister of Transport, have been centered on enhancing road safety, particularly concerning elderly drivers and users of electric motorcycles and tricycles. The talks aim to evaluate the capabilities of senior citizens based on age and physical condition to ensure the safety of all road users.

The idea of requiring a new competency assessment for senior citizens with lifetime licenses is being considered, starting with those aged 55 and above. Incentive programs may be introduced to encourage voluntary surrender of licenses for retesting. This concept remains under discussion, with no immediate enforcement planned. Details such as age criteria and assessment methods are still being deliberated.
