Bangkok: After 72 hours, the decision to transfer burn victims from the Lat Phrao brewery fire to another hospital will be based on the attending doctors' evaluations. The Minister of Public Health emphasized that patient safety is the utmost priority, with future expenses to be covered by insurance and the universal healthcare scheme.
According to Thai News Agency, Public Health Minister Phatthana Phromphat addressed concerns regarding the girlfriend of a sound engineer injured in the Lat Phrao fire. Her reluctance to transfer under the universal healthcare coverage (Gold Card) was noted, as her 72-hour coverage under the Emergency Patient (UCEP) scheme is nearing expiration. Minister Phatthana clarified that the 72-hour period allows for treatment at any hospital, but post this period, further options will be reassessed. He stressed that any hospital referral requires confirmation from both the referring and receiving doctors, prioritizing patient safety.
Minister Phatthana visited patients at Rajavithi Hospital and discussed the situation with hospitals across Bangkok, including private institutions caring for patients. The Ministry of Public Health has implemented a "hospital buddy" system to streamline patient care and referrals. This system considers each patient's insurance coverage and other benefits individually. He reiterated that any referral must be confirmed by the physicians involved at both ends.
Regarding the next steps, relatives can be assured that after 72 hours, the attending physician will monitor the patient closely, ensuring no unnecessary transfers occur. Minister Phatthana emphasized the focus on patient safety.
Minister Phatthana also mentioned that the UCEP policy involves evaluating expenses and patient transfers, which will be determined by the attending physician. Post-72-hour expenses will depend on the patient's insurance coverage, with hospitals discussing the applicable insurance plans. The Ministry of Public Health is prepared to assist in this process.
For patients with universal healthcare coverage (gold card) registered at hospitals in other provinces who wish to continue treatment at their original hospital after UCEP benefits expire, Minister Phatthana noted he will investigate further. Eligibility is not solely based on gold card registration but also the hospital's capacity to treat severe burns and other conditions. If necessary, the Ministry of Public Health will review patient care processes, including potential coverage transfers.
