Public Urged to Avoid Home Use of Ultrasonic Tartar Scrapers Due to Infection Risk

Bangkok: A public warning has been issued regarding the dangers of using ultrasonic tartar scrapers at home, highlighting the risk of infection. It is advised that individuals utilize the gold card to have tartar professionally removed at dental clinics participating in the “30 baht treatment everywhere” project or at regular service units, free of charge.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anukul Prueksanusak, Deputy Government Spokesperson, expressed concern over the sale of ultrasonic tartar scraping tools on social media, which are marketed as convenient and economical. He emphasized that tartar removal should not be attempted at home, regardless of the method, due to potential dangers if the equipment does not meet medical standards. Proper tartar removal requires specialized equipment that is sterilized according to medical standards to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Mr. Anukul elaborated that the ultrasonic tartar scraper, a medical device utilizing high-frequency vibration and water, should only be operated by a dental specialist. Proper use demands training in visual skills and a comprehensive understanding of oral anatomy to ensure complete tartar removal without damaging teeth, gums, and oral tissues. He outlined several risks associated with home use of ultrasonic tartar scrapers:

1. Enamel damage due to improper tool use can lead to tooth sensitivity and increased risk of decay.

2. Incorrect insertion of the scraper can cause injury to gums and soft tissues.

3. Incomplete tartar removal under the gums may lead to periodontitis, risking tooth loss.

4. Non-sterilized instruments pose a significant risk of infection from bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

Mr. Anukul advised the public to have their oral health checked and teeth scaled by a dentist 1-2 times a year to ensure effective and safe tartar removal. He also recommended proper diagnosis of other oral health issues. For further inquiries and consultations, individuals are encouraged to contact the Dental Institute via Facebook or LineOA.

For those with gold card rights, teeth scaling services are available three times a year at participating dental clinics or regular service units, with no additional charges.
