Push for ATTRIC to Lead ASEAN Automotive Testing as Private Racetrack Hub

Bangkok: Deputy Minister of Industry, Petty Officer 1st Class Yotsingh Liamlert, is driving forward efforts to position the National Automotive and Tire Testing Center (ATTRIC) as the leading automotive standards testing hub in ASEAN. This initiative, aimed at transforming Thailand into a world-class electric vehicle production base, is part of a strategic push to attract both investment and the burgeoning new car community.

According to Thai News Agency, the ATTRIC center, situated in Sanam Chai Khet District, Chachoengsao Province, within the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), spans approximately 1.98 million square meters and is managed by the Automotive Institute of Thailand (TAI). It is equipped to conduct comprehensive testing in line with UN regulations, covering a spectrum of components such as brake systems, seat belts, tires, and electric vehicle batteries. By 2026, the center aims to complete the construction of a high-speed circuit and crash test facility, significantly reducing homologation costs and timelines for Thai automakers and parts manufacturers. This development will enhance the EV innovation cycle domestically, eliminating reliance on international testing centers.

With a total project investment of approximately 3,705.7 million baht, the 4.4-kilometer high-speed circuit is poised to become one of the largest tracks in Asia by 2026. The facility will offer testing for various UN regulations, including those specific to electric vehicle batteries. To diversify revenue streams and attract private investors, the center plans to implement several engaging activities within a safety framework. These include a “Festival of Speed” featuring classic and high-performance cars, an “EV Performance Shootout” with races and workshops, and “Corporate Track Day” events for manufacturers to showcase new models.

The initiative also includes a “Motorsport Sandbox” for controlled automotive events and a “Talent and Tech Expo” to support startups and engineering students. Progress on the comprehensive design of the high-speed circuit and crash test facility is expected to draw sponsorships from car, tire, and energy companies, enhancing Thailand’s image as a “Mobility Hub.” Beyond functioning as a testing center, ATTRIC aims to propel Thailand to the forefront of modern automotive technology and culture in the region.
