Bangkok: Teacher Kai Surat, the caretaker of Khon costumes, has lauded Her Majesty the Queen Mother as a “Bodhi Tree” for her instrumental role in reviving Khon, a treasured aspect of Thai culture. Her Majesty’s generous financial contributions have ensured that this traditional art form is celebrated and preserved to this day.
According to Thai News Agency, Teacher Kai Surat Jongda, a veteran dance instructor and director, recalled his initial encounter with Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother in 2002. Tasked with caring for costumes during a royal performance, he expressed his joy and honor at serving Her Majesty, a figure he revered since childhood. His dedication to his role only deepened with each opportunity to serve.
Teacher Kai also highlighted Her Majesty’s proactive efforts to rejuvenate the Khon performance. Her Majesty suggested enhancements to the performance’s makeup and costumes, aligning them with the Khon style promoted by the Support Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques. She personally funded these improvements, leading to the establishment of the Royal Khon performance, which remains popular today.
Her Majesty’s commitment extended beyond performances, as she also prioritized the welfare of young Khon performers. Recognizing their dedication to preserving Thai arts, she provided accommodations and meals, and initiated a selection process for Khon performers. The initiative has attracted approximately 10,000 youths over the past decade. Her Majesty’s personal investment in nurturing these performers has significantly contributed to the widespread appreciation of Khon among Thai children.
Teacher Kai also recounted Her Majesty’s compassionate care for artists facing personal challenges. From aiding those involved in accidents to supporting artists with serious illnesses, Her Majesty’s quiet generosity has provided vital support for many. Her efforts extend to caring for orphans and disabled children, offering them a nurturing haven and underscoring her profound impact on Thai cultural preservation and welfare.
