Railway Board Approves Fare Reductions and Compensation for Delays

Bangkok: The first meeting of the Railway Board has resulted in the approval of fare reductions, the waiving of duplicate initial entry fees, and the introduction of compensation for train delays.

According to Thai News Agency, this meeting marks a significant policy shift under the Rail Transport Act of 2025, focusing on enhancing the quality of life for the public.

The Rail Transport Policy Committee's first meeting of 2026, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Mr. Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, aims to push forward subordinate legislation under the Rail Transport Act. This move ensures the rail system benefits the public fairly through key dimensions such as reducing the cost of living and enhancing passenger accountability.

Over the past decade, Thailand has invested over 1.8 trillion baht in rail infrastructure to connect urban and regional transportation. This investment aims for economic and social returns, with the latest measures addressing the need to lower living costs and improve travel efficiency.

The new policies include announcing a fare ceiling, waiving duplicate initial fees when changing train lines, and waiving fares for children under seven and people with disabilities. These steps are tangible ways to reduce living costs for people in the capital city. Additionally, compensation measures for train delays, including accident insurance, will provide peace of mind and reflect the value users should receive from government services.

The meeting highlighted a shift from focusing solely on financial returns to prioritizing sustainable quality of life improvements. The return on investment is seen not just in project profits but also in social benefits such as reduced pollution, fewer accidents, and time savings for the public.
