Bangkok: "Pipat" inspects the readiness of the Rama 2 elevated expressway, which will open for free trial runs on August 28th, heading south.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, along with other key officials, visited the site of the Intercity Highway No. 82 (M82) project to monitor progress and prepare for the trial opening of the additional Ekachai - Ban Phaeo section. The expressway, which aims to connect the network to the South, will be open 24/7 without tolls, starting on August 28, 2026, at 10:00 AM.
Mr. Pipat highlighted the Ministry of Transport's efforts to accelerate the M82 project under the Quick Win policy, facilitating travel and ensuring safety. The Department of Highways (DOH) is tasked with ensuring that all components meet standards, including the structure, road surface, lighting system, and safety equipment. The trial opening will see collaboration with the Highway Police, Provincial Police, and local agencies, ensuring a 24-hour standby for personnel and assistance vehicles.
Mr. Piyapong Chiwatnakulpaishal, Director-General of the Department of Highways, stated that the DOH, in collaboration with the Engineering Institute of Thailand and structural engineering experts, conducted a load test on the structure using AASHTO standards. The results confirmed the structure's readiness, and modern technologies were used to increase assessment accuracy. The trial opening will feature a speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour for four-wheeled vehicles and 65 kilometers per hour for trucks and buses.
Commencing on August 28, 2026, the trial section from Ekachai to Ban Phaeo spans 16.4 kilometers and includes four on-ramps and off-ramps. The trial run will be toll-free, with a plan for full opening and toll collection to commence in 2029. The M82 is expected to alleviate traffic congestion on Rama II Road, improve logistics efficiency, and enhance economic opportunities along its route, benefiting Bangkok and the southern provinces.
