Rare ‘Phisawong Thai Thong’ Plant Discovered in Umphang Forest

Umphang: Forest rangers from the Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary in Tak Province have captured a remarkable natural phenomenon during their recent patrol: the emergence of "Phisawong Thai Thong," a rare and tiny plant, blooming in the heart of the forest as the rainy season approaches.

According to Thai News Agency, "Phisawong Thai Thong," also known as "Phisawong Tan Nok Huk" or "Owl's Eye Thismia," is a minute herbaceous plant of the Burmanniaceae family. This endemic species is unique to Thailand, specifically found in the limestone hills of the dry dipterocarp forest on Doi Hua Mod, Umphang District, Tak Province. Officially recognized as a new species in 2018, its scientific name, thaithongiana, honors Associate Professor Dr. Obchan Thaithong, a renowned botany expert in Thailand.

The plant's distinctive botanical features and life cycle set it apart from typical plants. Measuring less than 2 millimeters tall, with flowers ranging from 7.5 to 11 millimeters in height, it ranks among the smallest flowering plants. Its flowers exhibit a bluish-green hue and resemble miniature pitchers or cups, with tips resembling a small owl's face. As a mycoheterotrophic plant, Phisawong Thai Thong lacks chlorophyll and obtains nutrients parasitically from mycorrhizal fungi, thriving in high-organic-matter soils.

Its short life cycle, predominantly underground, sees the plant emerge briefly to bloom during the rainy season, from approximately August to February. Due to its limited distribution area and sensitivity to environmental changes, the plant is currently classified as Endangered according to IUCN criteria. The discovery of Phisawong Thai Thong by the SMART Patrol team not only impressed the rangers but also highlighted the health of the benthic ecosystem in the Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary.

Recording the plant's coordinates and population data is crucial for planning protection, disseminating knowledge, and implementing proactive measures to conserve this biodiversity for future generations in Thailand's forests.
