Recommendations for ‘Man-Eating Shoes’ During Songkran

Bangkok: Here it is again! The Man-Eating Shoes festival during Songkran is dangerous. Here are some precautions and what to do if an accident occurs.

According to Thai News Agency, anyone who participates in Songkran and opts for flip-flops while playing in the water may have faced similar challenges. The sight of flip-flops being sucked into the mud during Songkran festivities is common across venues. While many prefer flip-flops for their comfort and water-friendly nature, they often lead to the problem of ‘man-eating shoes,’ where the footwear becomes difficult to remove and can even engulf the leg entirely. This issue is particularly problematic with rubber shoes due to their slippery nature and tight fit, affecting participants of all ages and genders.

To avoid such incidents, it is advisable to be well-prepared for Songkran water activities. Footwear with straps that cover the toes is recommended to prevent the shoes from clinging to your legs. Additionally, this type of footwear minimizes the risk of injuries from stepping on unseen objects in crowded areas during the festival.

In cases where shoes have already become stuck, using slippery soap can facilitate removal. If the shoe remains tight, avoid pulling or jerking it to prevent injuries, abrasions, or infections. Instead, use scissors to carefully cut the footwear, ensuring that the leg and foot remain straight while removing the shoe.
