Rayong: A bizarre shrine to ancestral spirits housed in a refrigerator has caused a stir, with locals revealing it has been haunted for generations and is also said to bring good fortune.

According to Thai News Agency, the "Refrigerator Grandparents Shrine" in Rayong province has become a unique and eye-catching sacred place revered by locals. Its unusual shape is not the only reason for its fame; it is also believed to be haunted. Local residents say that whether or not someone receives good fortune depends on whether they feel inspired by the ancestral spirits to visit the shrine before trying their luck.

The family of 84-year-old Aunt Wanthana shared an extraordinary event involving their 51-year-old daughter, Ms. Da. She invited her family to try their luck after casually seeking good fortune from the shrine, hoping for tens of thousands of baht. Remarkably, she ended up winning 80,000 baht.

Ms. Da also spoke about the haunted nature of the shrine, describing how a mysterious dark shadow often appears near the trees close to the shrine during Buddhist holy days, instilling fear and dissuading her from visiting the area at night.

Another daughter of Aunt Wanthana, Ms. Kae, recounted the legend of hauntings associated with the place, a story passed down for decades. The shrine's unique structure has an interesting origin. Uncle Boonlue, Aunt Wanthana's 82-year-old husband, explained that the original shrine was a deteriorating single-pillar wooden structure. Feeling guided by the spirits, he used an old, unused refrigerator as a base, added a corrugated iron roof, and placed the original statues of the deceased grandparents on top. This led to the creation of the "Refrigerator Grandparents Shrine," now enveloped in stories of its eerie atmosphere and fortune-bringing abilities. Villagers have reported sudden gusts of wind and rain while praying for luck, with lucky numbers being revealed during these events.
